My little girl became a woman and Mason gets a spare

I'm honestly not sure how to make it through the teen years and I'm NOT EVEN THE TEEN!!!

Last week, one month shy of her 14th birthday, my baby girl got her period for the first time. While I’m happy she was at my house, I was incredibly jealous her father was in Cabo. When she texted him “dad, I’m a woman now!”. His response was quote “??” She texted back, “I got my period.” His response…”I’m sorry. I hope you feel better.”

It’s been a minute since having to explain and teach and coach through this. By a minute, I mean a lifetime. Heck, my mother had a pop up book she used to explain the birds and the bees and the accompanying menstrual cycle. There is no need to go back and reread that. You got it right…a freaking pop up book. I’ve included a link if this is something you’d be interested in: https://a.co/d/fpr8wyv

This process started Saturday and by the time Monday came I thoroughly thought we were ready to tackle middle school with a period. I thought wrong, we were NOT ready. Full melt down. First her then me. My brain has produced a chemical to help me block all memories of Monday.

By Wednesday, baby girl was convinced this terrible awful thing was over. But momma knew that was not the case. I told her not to fall for this fake news and absolutely understand no circumstances do we ever wear light colors during this time.

Three hours later I got a call from the school. Which a teary voice. Baby girl’s period had come back after gym class (maybe even during gym class). I believe even the average reader knows the solution here. Go to the nurse and she will take care of this. She’s a middle school nurse for Christ sake…basically one step from sainthood. The voice on the other end of the phone says, what do I do about my white pants?

Are you freaking kidding me?!?! Why are you wearing white pants? Response: I thought this terrible awful thing was over. It’s as if I was dropping knowledge and nobody was picking up what I was putting down.

Short story, long - we made it through. We survived the week. Only 40-45 years to go baby girl!

In other news, Mason started miracle league bowling. Miracle league has been awesome for this young man. In the Fall we tried football and basketball with him. He enjoyed the football more but really the inclusiveness and patient environment is so special.

He has been working with Alex who is so much more than a respite provider. He is patient and caring. Alex has been spending time with Mason on Sundays and he has been coaching Mason by showing him and also the verbal prompts.

Based on what I’ve seen I would not say Mason is ready for the PBA. He lacks the rotation it takes to make bowling look cool plus he is not at all interested in wearing the shoes. While not bowling a 300, he is playing the long game and getting spares. When he bowls he tosses the ball from a standing position and it S-L-O-W-L-Y travels the lane to the pins. Needless to say I’m beyond thankful that Mason goes bowling with Alex because if I did it, there is a slight chance I’d be bowling for Mason like I do 8th grade social studies homework.
